Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

Below are fortnightly updates from Year 3.  This includes a summary of the two weeks including any important information for the coming weeks (reminders etc).  These will be updated every other Friday.

The topic flow chart for the summer term can be found here

Friday 7 July

It has been a very busy but enjoyable couple of weeks in Year 3 and the glitter and feathers are well and truly everywhere!  The children have come up with some excellent ideas for their native American-inspired dance, with lots of foot stomping!  The children helped to create their own costume ideas based on the natural elements of fire, water and air.  They have had lots of fun creating designs for their t-shirt and we are all looking forward to seeing their final performances next week.

In Science the children worked really well in groups to set up their own fair tests to investigate what is needed for plants to grow healthily.  Different groups have investigated air, soil, sunlight, space and water.  The children have been measuring the plants and making a note of their observations.

In literacy the class have started a new unit looking at shape poetry.  They enjoyed reading different calligrams, performing them with a partner and talking about the different effects created.  In spelling we have been revisiting apostrophes – using them both for contractions e.g. cannot = can’t and also to show possession e.g. It is Jack’s game.  Can you write some sentences showing examples of each?

In maths we have been looking at mass and measuring and comparing different amounts using grams and kilograms and converting between the two.  Can you find some items of food at home or at the shop using these measurements?  Can you work out which is heavier/ lighter?

On open day the children were challenged to create their own Roman-inspired chariot.  They first had to do some research about Roman chariots, why they were used, what they looked like and how they were made.  They made their own versions using construction materials ready for a chariot race at the end of the day!
