Year 1 have had great enjoyment of all things to do with books this fortnight. A walk through their local streets to the Kingston Library on Monday was exciting not only because they had a workshop planned but because they were able to select a book themselves and take it back to school. The focus was on ‘Sharing a Million Stories’ and were read to by the librarian and then had time to relax whilst looking at books together.
For World Book Day the children dressed up, we had some amazing and creative costumes from a wide range of favourite books.
For Geography, the children are learning about the four countries of the United Kingdom, for this week they focused on Scotland with its castles, lochs, mountains and traditional foods. Rather than trying haggis the children ate a Scottish shortbread to get a flavour of the country!
Maths has been particularly interactive, counting in twos they worked with a partner to efficiently count a given number of pasta into a bowl and record it on a tens frame. Designing and building their own pirate ship from reclaimed materials has been a swashbuckling adventure and they are thinking where their ship may sail them away to, maybe to find gold!
