Transport is proving to be a very popular topic with the Year 1 children. It has also given the class one of their first experiences of local history.
Last week, the children walked to Sigrist Square which was once the site of the Sopwith Aviation Company where aircraft were designed and built form the beginning of the 20th Century. The children spent time looking at the buildings, including the original frontage of the factory. On the walk, they spotted signs showing the military aircraft that were built there, a real propeller and the ones included in the design of the fence around the square.
Back in the classroom, the children examined old aerial photographs and spoke about what is the same and what different. Many children noticed that road names and their layout has not changed but now there is no steam or smoke coming from the railway track.
During their art lesson last Friday, the children enjoyed having a go at drawing their own picture of a Sopwith Camel, one of the aircraft built at that factory. The children are looking forward to their trip to Brooklands Museum on Wednesday 13th March where they will have the opportunity to look and experience aircraft more closely. They will also be able to participate in a special Science Week activity. Further details will follow on a parentmail message next week.
