The Year 1 children are making a great start to the year and a successful transition from Reception. The new topic this term is Castles and it is stimulating lots of interest within the class.  It was wonderful to see some models of castles that were made at home over the holidays.

The Castles workshop on Thursday was a tremendous success. Through dressing up, role play, teamwork and construction, the children learned about the hierarchy of people living and working in the castle. The finale of the day was taking part in a re-enactment of a Medieval battle. Preparation included building castle walls strong enough to withstand a battering ram propelled by the children. They also enjoyed watching the workshop facilitator testing the walls with a mangonel.

Our class book ‘The Queen’s Hat’ is inspiring writing in English lessons including some wonderful descriptions of Buckingham Palace.

Science lessons focus on ‘ourselves’ and it was exciting to see the baby photographs which the children brought to school. They enjoyed looking at the photos and trying to guess who they were. Some smiling faces were very recognisable but other photos, particularly the young baby ones, were trickier. The children also took part in a class discussion about how they have changed; observations included how the children can now scoot, run, read and talk.
