The children in Year 1 are continuing to enjoy reading for pleasure and extending their phonics skills. After drop off in the morning, many children choose books from our selection of early readers and also love sharing our atlases or non fiction books. Over the summer holiday, we hope they continue to enjoy reading for pleasure - comics, graphic novels, picture books, facts, rhymes or story books - it really does not matter ! Also, Kingston libraries are running the Summer Reading Challenge which this year is Marvellous Makers https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ Please look at the website or pop along to one of the libraries to find out more and choose some books.
Last week, the children completed writing their own books about an island. They wrote some fantastic stories about finding gold and illustrated these. No doubt, your child will enjoy showing you their book when their take their work home at the end of term. The Year 1 science lessons have focussed on working scientifically and using knowledge the children have learned this year. They completed an investigation about ‘paper flowers’ and, after cutting out flower shapes, they tested which were most successful at floating in water. They discovered the bigger flowers with more petals were the ones which stayed afloat the longest.
