Over the past couple of weeks, Year 5 have started their Summer 1 topic of Kingston through time. We started the topic by using Digi-maps to look at Ordnance Survey maps of Kingston in the 1890's, 1950's and present day looking at how the land use has changed over time. We followed this up with a visit to Kingston Museum and History Centre last week. At the museum, we spent time looking at Kingston through various periods of time and took part in a handling session focusing on evidence from the Anglo-Saxon time in Kingston. At the history centre, we looked at the maps they have showing Kingston and how it has changed over the past 150 years. We also looked at photographs of Eden Street and Elm Road from the 1900's to see what changed to current day - St Luke's being built being one of the changes!
In English, we have continued looking at 'Tuesday', producing short drama pieces of news reports of the fictional event and this week planning, writing and publishing newspaper articles describing what happened on Tuesday night! We focused on using formal language, a catchy headline and using direct and indirect quotes correctly to our writing over the week.
In Maths, we have completed our decimal and percentage topic and moved on a short topic looking at area and perimeter of rectangles, compound shapes and polygons. We have solved a range of problems using the inverse operation when the area and perimeter are given and move onto angles at the end this week.
Our Science lessons have continued to look at lifecycles of other animals focusing on amphibians and insects by looking at the metamorphosis that takes place throughout their life as the structure of their body changes. We then compared this to the lifecycle of a mammal where they just get bigger!
In PE, we have started to think about Sports Day practise and working hard on our over arm bowling in Cricket lessons.
Before Easter some of the children in Year 5 completed an optional homework assignment to create a short story about a Crazy Creature as part of a Young Writers competition. All the entries that were entered have been selected to be published in their up and coming book. A fantastic achievement for our young authors! Well done!
