‘Down at the bottom of the garden’ our current theme, has kept Nursery very bus. Our mud kitchen is back open for business with the children keen to dig, mix and transfer using different utensils and containers. The new addition of a real microwave has sparked the children’s inquisitiveness with many questions asked. “Is it ok to turn this dial? Will it get hot?”
Our story of the week, Superworm by Julia Donaldson paired with our rhyme of the week, Wiggly Woo, has been a hit with the children who confidently joined in the repeated phrases and actions. They were also inspired to dig deep in the mud to find wriggly worms in their natural habitat. Inside on the interactive whiteboard we carefully watched a video of worms moving through soil, with the children concluding that the worms are ‘rolling’ and ‘going underground to eat food’.
‘Down at the bottom of the garden’ we also learnt this week that we can plant and grow. We listened to the story Supertato by Sue Hendra before planting our own Supertato’s in the Nursery garden. We know that the potatoes need sunlight and water to grow before we can harvest them later on in the year. We have also been working on our listening skills as we have followed simple instructions to create a cress head which we will harvest next week!
