Last week, the Year 4 were treated to a fantastic Ancient Egyptian workshop! The children ensured they looked the part but dressing up from the past or as archaeologists. During the first part of the day, the children were taken back to the start of the Egyptian period. They learned how Egypt was divided into two parts, Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. However, it was soon noticed that Lower Egypt was at the top. This was due to the direction of the River Nile and the Mediterranean Sea. The children enjoyed taking part in a quiz where they had to read board full of information to find the answers. Did you know that the Egyptians worshipped onions?
The second part of the day comprised of looking at several artefacts. The children learned that the Egyptians wore eyeliner to prevent sand from going in their eyes. As well as this, they had a look at some fascinating pictures from the day Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb.
In the afternoon, the children were able to share their knowledge of mummification. Several of the children volunteered to mummify ‘Bob’. This activity really helped to consolidate what they knew ahead of writing fantastic mummification instructions the following day! Finally, the children learned about Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and how the Egyptian period ended. It really was a brilliant and informative day!
