    How Our Learning Is Organised

    At St Luke’s, our curriculum is built around a series of rich, engaging topics that bring learning to life. Each year group studies termly topics — Autumn, Spring and Summer — allowing children to explore big ideas in depth while making meaningful links across subjects. These topics create a clear structure for learning and ensure every child experiences a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum.

    To help families understand how learning develops from Reception to Year 6, we have created our Curriculum Journey document. This shows the full progression of topics across the school, highlighting how children revisit key ideas, deepen understanding and build towards the expectations of secondary education. It provides a clear, visual overview of the learning pathway your child will follow during their time at St Luke’s.

    These summaries give families a clear picture of what learning looks like in each year group and how our curriculum supports children to grow academically, socially and spiritually.

    Reception

    Reception's autumn term topic is 'Celebrating Our World', where children settle into school life whilst exploring special people and celebrations. Children will develop their phonics skills using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, working on fine motor skills to form recognisable letters and beginning to read and write tricky words. They'll explore religion and the beliefs of others through festivals and celebrations, developing an understanding of similarities and differences between themselves and their peers. Mathematical learning focuses on matching and sorting, comparing amounts, representing and composing numbers to 5, and exploring patterns, shapes and positional language. Science activities include harvest-themed observational drawings and exploring people who help us in the community. Physical development includes gymnastics sessions and outdoor activities, whilst children learn to move safely and confidently. Art and design explores observational drawing, engineering through model-making, and the work of artist Yayoi Kusama, alongside imaginative role play and music sessions featuring traditional songs and rhymes.

    In the spring term, Reception will explore the magical world of fairytales through their topic 'Once Upon a Time'. Children will read, listen to and immerse themselves in different fairytales, developing their reading and writing skills through creative writing and phonics work. They'll explore moral issues through fairy stories, learning about right and wrong and fairness whilst caring for each other and the environment. The children will investigate fairytale settings through hands-on activities, create castle models, and enjoy imaginative role play. Mathematical learning will focus on number bonds to 10, addition, and exploring 2D and 3D shapes. Science learning includes planting and growing activities linked to springtime. The children will develop their physical skills through dance linked to fairytales, moving safely and imaginatively. Art and design work involves modelling and designing linked to the topic, whilst music sessions incorporate songs and rhymes from traditional tales.

    Reception's summer term topic explores 'Mini/Mega/Seabeast', discovering the fascinating world of creatures big and small. Children will read, listen to and immerse themselves in stories about different beasts, continuing to develop their phonics skills through oral blending and segmenting whilst forming recognisable letters using the Little Wandle handwriting scheme. They'll explore different habitats, sort and classify beasts, and care for animals including butterflies, learning about looking after our environment. Mathematical learning focuses on building numbers and patterns beyond 10, adding more and taking away, doubling, sharing and grouping, and deepening understanding of odds and evens. Spatial thinking develops through matching, rotating, manipulating, composing and decomposing shapes, and mapping activities. Science activities include exploring careers related to the topic and investigating different habitats. Physical development includes preparing for sports day, moving safely and confidently, and developing independence in getting changed. Art and design uses different materials and mediums for self-portraits and topic-related work, whilst music explores moving patterns and cumulative songs with actions and accompaniments.

    Year 1

    Year 1's autumn term topic explores 'Royal Homes', discovering castles and palaces across the UK. Children will learn what castles and palaces are, where they should be built, and what life was like in medieval times in both castles and surrounding villages. They'll compare royals from the past with those of today and investigate the different jobs people had in castles. Geography work involves locating castles across the UK and naming and locating the four countries, capital cities and surrounding seas of the United Kingdom. In science, children will name human body parts and senses, comparing them with those of common animals whilst observing seasonal changes. Design and technology brings the topic to life as children design, make and evaluate 3D recycled models of castles. Mathematics covers place value, addition and subtraction, and geometry. Music develops understanding of steady beat at different tempi, responding to changes of mood in music and identifying repeated rhythm patterns, whilst computing explores systems, networks and creating media.

    Year 1's spring term topic is 'Travel and Transport', exploring different forms of transportation and significant individuals who changed how we travel. Children will learn about the history of flight and trains, discovering how these inventions transformed society. They'll also explore local history, connecting their learning to the area around school. In science, children will identify and name everyday materials like wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock, whilst distinguishing between their properties and exploring seasonal changes. Geography work develops fieldwork and observational skills through local walks, identifying the school on a map and studying key human and physical features of the surrounding environment. Mathematical learning covers place value to 50, addition and subtraction, and fractions. Art focuses on landscape images using perspective and exploring pattern and shape, whilst design technology involves designing and constructing moving vehicles, bringing their topic learning to life.

    Year 1's summer term topic is 'Space Travel', exploring the solar system, planets and famous space explorers who changed our understanding of the universe. Children will learn about the history of space travel and inventions, creating space timelines and researching the planets. In science, they'll identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees, and describe the basic structure of common flowering plants. Geography focuses on the local area, developing fieldwork skills and understanding of the immediate environment. Art explores space art using chalks and pastels, seasonal landscapes inspired by David Hockney, and shape and pattern work. Mathematics covers multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, place value within 100, money, measurement, time and capacity. Music develops understanding of beat through movement, body percussion and instruments, exploring changes in tempo and pitch using voices and tuned percussion. Physical education includes athletics, dance and games, building fitness and coordination skills.

    Year 2

    Year 2's autumn term topic is 'Once Upon a Time', immersing children in traditional and fairy tales. Through English, children will write diary entries in role, create explanatory writing, compose alternative fairy tales and poetry, develop setting descriptions and produce information writing. Geography focuses on 'Magnificent Mapping' – identifying the seven continents and five oceans, locating all UK countries and their capital cities, using a compass to learn cardinal directions, and creating a map of the school. Science explores animals including humans, describing the basic needs of animals and humans for survival (water, food and air) and learning about keeping healthy through exercise and hygiene. Mathematics covers place value focusing on ones, tens and hundreds, addition and subtraction up to and beyond 100, with a focus on the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables. Art develops self-portraits and drawing techniques, colour mixing and observational drawings. Music focuses on recognising and responding to steady beat and rhythmic patterns.

    Year 2 will investigate 'Fire! Fire!' – learning all about the Great Fire of London this spring term. Children will explore why this event was so significant in British history, using timelines to order key events and comparing life in the 17th century to today. They'll step into the shoes of people from the past, writing diary entries in role and creating narrative comic book spreads. The children will develop their understanding of materials in science, identifying properties and investigating uses of different materials whilst grouping everyday materials. In mathematics, they'll work on 2D and 3D shapes, money (calculating and finding change), multiplication and division (2, 5, 10 times tables), and measuring length, height, mass, capacity and temperature. The topic comes alive through music, with children singing with expression and experimenting with pitch, beat and dynamics. Art work explores colour mixing inspired by Kandinsky, whilst design technology involves designing and making a pouch using running stitch.

    Year 2's summer term topic is 'Explorers', investigating significant explorers and their achievements. Children will explore what makes a person significant, compare a range of explorers, and use primary and secondary sources to gather information whilst understanding where these explorers fit on a chronological timeline. Geography compares England to Kenya, identifying similarities and differences and developing map skills. In science, children will observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants, research how plants need water, light and suitable temperature to grow, and identify plants and animals in different habitats. They'll explore food chains and how animals obtain food from plants and other animals. Mathematics covers mass, temperature and capacity, fractions (halves, thirds and quarters), telling time, statistics using tally charts and pictograms, and position and direction. Art and design involves making healthy wraps exploring balanced diets, and creating sculptures inspired by public art. Music develops whole class instrumental instruction, understanding musical notation and learning to play musically whilst improvising and composing.

    Year 3

    Year 3 begins the year exploring 'The Stone Age', constructing informed responses through thoughtful selection and organisation of historical information. Children will understand key facts about prehistoric Britain, what humans needed for survival, and what artefacts tell us about how people used to live. They'll devise historical questions, find similarities and differences, and interpret historical sources. In English, children will explore 'UG: Boy Genius of the Stone Age', discussing anachronisms and character traits whilst writing letters and diary entries from characters' perspectives. Science focuses on rocks – comparing and grouping different kinds based on appearance and physical properties, describing how fossils are formed, and recognising that soils are made from rocks and organic matter. Geography explores volcanoes and earthquakes, interpreting diagrams of seismic activity and using maps, atlases and grid references. Design and technology involves following recipes and designing, creating and evaluating tools relating to the topic. Art uses sketchbooks to record observations and improves painting skills using various techniques and artists for inspiration.

    Year 3's spring term topic asks 'What Did the Romans Do for Us?' Children will study Ancient Roman civilisation and its influence on the modern world through advances in ancient technologies, architecture, literature and art. They'll develop their geographical skills by reading physical and political maps to identify the human and physical features of ancient and modern Rome. In English, children will respond to 'Escape from Pompeii', writing eyewitness accounts and persuasive texts. Science focuses on animals including humans, identifying that humans and some animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement, before exploring forces and magnets – observing how magnets attract or repel and investigating friction and resistance. In art, children will research Ancient Roman mosaic styles before designing, creating and evaluating their own mosaic patterns. Language work explores Latin roots of English words, translating stories and retelling classical myths, helping children understand the lasting impact of Roman culture.

    Year 3's summer term explores 'London to Lima', comparing the geographical similarities and differences between these two major cities. Children will name and locate counties and cities of the UK, identifying geographical regions and their human and physical features, before analysing how London and Lima compare. In English, they'll respond to 'Flood' by Alvaro Villa, writing eyewitness accounts and persuasive texts, explore biography writing through 'The Bluest of Blues', and analyse poetry techniques. Science focuses on plants – identifying and describing functions of different parts of flowering plants, exploring requirements for life and growth, investigating water transportation, and understanding pollination, seed formation and dispersal. The second science topic is light, recognising that dark is the absence of light, exploring how light is reflected and how shadows are formed. Art explores Peruvian culture and tradition, researching textile artist Elena Izcue and creating vibrant geometric patterns replicating folk art. Mathematics covers multiplication and division using mental and written methods, and fractions including equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, and solving fraction problems.

    Year 4

    Year 4's autumn term begins with 'Anglo Saxons vs Vikings' before moving to 'Majestic Mountains'. In history, children will consider what Britain was like before the Viking invasion, describe the impact of the invasion, analyse why Viking longboats were successful, and explain how the Viking invasion affected Anglo Saxon settlements. They'll discover what life was like for Vikings in Britain and how the Viking era came to an end. The second half term explores mountains through geography – identifying features of mountains, locating the highest peak on each continent, describing how mountains are formed, and comparing life locally to life in mountain ranges. Science covers electricity (identifying risks and staying safe, constructing simple circuits, defining conductors and insulators) and states of matter (explaining differences between solid, liquid and gas). English explores Viking-themed texts including 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' and poetry including 'Still I Rise'. Art researches Henry Ossawa Tanner's work whilst design and technology involves designing, making and evaluating electrical systems including light boxes.

    Year 4's spring term topic is 'Protecting Our World', with a focus on rainforests and environmental issues. Children will locate rainforests globally, describe their layers, and explain the causes and effects of deforestation whilst exploring the lives of indigenous people and features of rainforest homes. In science, they'll investigate sound – how sounds are made and patterns between pitch and sound – plus study the digestive system, explaining tooth functions, causes of tooth decay, and interpreting food chains. English work includes writing manifestos for equality, stream of consciousness writing, and continuation narratives, developing persuasive and creative writing skills. The children will develop their musical skills through learning the ukulele, playing and performing in solo and ensemble contexts. Mathematics covers multiplication and division extensively, including counting in various times tables, using the distributive law, and applying divisibility rules. Art explores the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, using lines and colour to create depth, texture and movement.

    Year 4's summer term topic is 'Ancient Egyptians', exploring what can be learned from the Egyptians and their way of life. Children will locate the period on a timeline, analyse the hierarchy of roles in Egyptian society, explore leisure time in ancient Egypt, and describe different types of pyramids. They'll investigate famous discoveries and compare the lives of well-known Pharaohs whilst learning to write like an Egyptian. In English, children will explore 'Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx', using powerful synonyms for character descriptions, building suspense with short sentences, using fronted adverbials and punctuating direct speech. Science focuses on living things and their habitats – identifying characteristics of living things, using classification tables and creating dichotomous keys, and evaluating how changing environments affect living things. Mathematics covers fractions (composing and decomposing mixed numbers, comparing and ordering, solving addition and subtraction problems) and geometry exploring different types of triangles, symmetry, and lines of symmetry in regular polygons. Art explores the life and vibrant style of Frida Kahlo, creating self-portraits incorporating symbolic elements, flowers, animals and bold colours.

    Year 5

    Year 5's autumn term topic is 'We Are Explorers!' combining geography and science learning. In geography, children will identify features of ordnance survey maps using keys, locate features using four-figure and six-figure grid references, read compasses and give directions using compass directions. They'll explore famous explorers and explain the impact they had on our understanding of the world. Science focuses on properties of materials – explaining the difference between states of matter, investigating properties through fair testing to find the best insulator, and defining the difference between reversible and irreversible change through exploring dissolving. English develops reading for fluency and comprehension, writing newspaper articles and diary entries. Mathematics covers place value including Roman numerals up to 1,000,000, and addition and subtraction using mental strategies and written methods with numbers more than four digits. Art explores how artists create the illusion of depth and distance, studying 17th century Dutch painters and optical art. Computing explores how computers connect to form systems and how search engines work.

    Year 5 will explore 'Tudor Times: What is the Legacy of Tudor London?' in the spring term. Children will understand where the Tudors came in British history, exploring the family tree and researching the Tudor legacy of buildings in London, including royal palaces. They'll discover what palace life was like and what Tudors ate based on available foods, developing their understanding of daily life in this period. The children will explore the challenges faced by Tudor monarchs and significant historical events that shaped the era. In science, they'll investigate different forces including gravity, friction, air and water resistance, and explore how mechanisms such as levers, pulleys and gears work through practical investigations. Art and design work includes exploring Tudor portraits, developing drawing and painting techniques, and designing and making gears and pulley systems. English develops critical reading skills through exploring character viewpoints, whilst mathematics focuses on multiplication, division, perimeter and area calculations.

    Year 5's summer term topic asks 'Do maps tell us everything we need to know about Kingston?' Children will use digital mapping to see how land use has changed in Kingston over time, explore key landmarks in Kingston and surrounding areas, and investigate the River Thames' role in Kingston's history. They'll analyse maps and pictures to understand how Kingston has changed, including the main high street. In science, children will explore living things and their habitats, understanding key differences and similarities between life cycles of different animals including flowering plants, mammals, birds and amphibians. English develops diary writing, writing fiction from pictures, newspaper articles and biography writing, whilst reading develops fluency, prediction and inference skills. Mathematics focuses on geometry – identifying 3D shapes, measuring and comparing angles (acute, obtuse and reflex), distinguishing between regular and irregular polygons, and exploring position and direction through reflection and translation. Design and technology involves designing and making stuffed toys, creating templates, joining fabric using blanket stitch, and using appliqué or decorative stitching. Music develops performance skills with awareness of audience, writing lyrics and creating accompaniments using ostinato.

    Year 6

    Year 6's autumn term explores two topics: 'Walk on the Wild Side' and 'Lest We Forget'. The first half term focuses on climate zones and biomes in geography – locating and describing key aspects of climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, investigating features of the six main land biomes, and illustrating the interdependency of organisms whilst highlighting environmental problems and solutions. Science explores living things and their habitats, taking an in-depth look at classification and how different species that are closely related can be identified. English includes environmental poetry ('The Lost Words'), persuasive writing about environmental concerns, and creating nature documentaries. The second half term explores Britain's role in World War 2 through history – summarising causes and consequences, interpreting pictorial evidence, illustrating how the war changed lives, and explaining how Britain defended itself. English develops emotive war poetry, persuasive speeches, and characterised narrative writing. Art explores how artists show movement in still images and 3D forms across different styles and techniques, whilst mathematics covers fractions extensively and converting between units of measurement.

    Year 6's spring term topic is 'Victoriana', asking whether it was a 'Golden era or Dark era?' Children will place and define the Victorian era within British history, prioritising factors of the Industrial Revolution and developing their own historical perspectives. They'll explore how social reformers improved children's lives, investigate Victorian schooling, and examine how new laws transformed education and society. The children will analyse how the introduction of railways changed travel and trade, understanding the far-reaching impact of technological advancement. In English, they'll explore Victorian literature, writing narratives from characters' viewpoints, studying biographical writing, and analysing narrative poetry. Science focuses on evolution and inheritance, debating whether extinct species should be brought back to life and researching natural selection and how scientific understanding has developed over time. Mathematics covers ratio, algebra, and decimals. Art explores the Arts & Craft movement, reproducing patterns and designing motifs, before producing tile prints using symmetrical and rotational techniques.

    Year 6's summer term topic explores 'It's All Greek', asking how significant the legacy of Ancient Greece is for life today. Children will study Ancient Greek civilisation and its influence on the modern world through democracy, philosophy, the Olympics, architecture, literature and art. They'll read physical and political maps to identify human and physical features of ancient and modern Greece, locating landmarks using six-figure grid references. In science, children investigate the circulatory system, exploring how water and nutrients are transported and recognising the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on how bodies function. English develops manifesto writing for equality, stream of consciousness writing, and narrative continuation, whilst exploring levels of formality and using semi-colons, colons and dashes effectively. Mathematics focuses on geometry – drawing shapes using given dimensions, classifying geometric shapes, finding unknown angles in triangles, quadrilaterals and regular polygons, and exploring circles (radius, diameter, circumference). Position and direction work includes describing positions on the full coordinate grid and translating and reflecting shapes. Art researches Ancient Greek theatre, designing and creating comedy and tragedy masks inspired by Greek culture and tradition.
