The new year has brought a new energy and motivation to the Year 4 classroom. The spring term focuses on saving the planet, with our first topic being about the Amazon rainforest and the threat of deforestation, leading into a topic about plastic pollution with some fantastic writing opportunities linked to both. The children have shown such passion for the theme so far and they are in the process of writing essays to persuade the reader that it is vital to save the Amazon rainforest. The class are looking forward to their trip to Kew Gardens next week to learn about the climate in rainforests.
In science, Year 4 are learning about the digestive system in animals and humans. Last week, the class focused on the first stage of digestion: teeth. Year 4 have conducted an investigation to see which liquids cause the most decay on our enamel. For this, five hard-boiled eggs were placed in cups of water, orange juice, Coca-Cola, Fanta and vinegar and they will be observed over time. Within two hours, the shell of the egg in vinegar had almost ‘lost’ a thin layer due to the acidity. The children are eager to find out which starts to decay next!
