The children have begun practising the Nativity over the past few weeks which has sparked curiosity about the story of Jesus’ birth. Reception have asked questions such as ‘Where was Jesus born?’, ‘Why did kings come to visit him?’ and ‘What is a manger?’ Therefore, we have followed this line of inquiry and have begun exploring the Nativity Story. The children have enjoyed acting out the story using puppets and small world toys and have also been recreating what they have learnt in picture form, within our writing and art areas.
In phonics, Reception have learned the last few sounds of Letters and Sounds Phase 3 and we will spend the last few weeks before Christmas consolidating this knowledge through fun games and activities. The children have really impressed us with how quickly they have picked up the sounds. Please try and use the phonics sheets given out at parents’ evening to practise these sounds at home.
In maths, Reception have been exploring ‘rules’ and grouping objects by a given rule or a rule they created. The children have taken to this well and have engaged in some fantastic mathematical thinking. Why not try sorting some different objects at home into groups and encourage your child to explain the ‘rule’.
