Year 6 have embraced the new responsibilities and challenges that have been presented to them in their first week in starting the school year. There has been great excitement about the new opportunities that lie ahead including the various positions as role models for the children to take on to support the school community.
In this first week, Year 6 have been especially keen to take on the task of supporting the younger children in the school while sitting beside them on the benches in the hall during worship and they look forward to meeting their young buddies later in the term.
With the first topic of ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ at the forefront of their learning, investigations into the distinguishing characteristics of organisms have taken place in science lessons. Equipped with classification keys and descriptions of less familiar groups of invertebrates, the children had rich discussions to determine the best fit.
In their writing, strong imagery using poetic devices has highlighted the wonder of wildlife through a collection of poems about the natural world. The children have been using the poet’s models of figurative language to write their own poems inspired by the sights and sounds of nature.
