Year 1 have really impressed us with their creativity over the last two weeks. A special highlight has been the amazing poems the children wrote in response to hearing Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’ and the poem ‘Out and About’ by Shirley Hughes. Although enjoyment of large open spaces is currently limited, the children explored their own gardens and local areas. Their poems included sensory descriptions, for example, empty trampolines with puddles of glittering rainwater, the sound of birds, trains, raindrops, foxes and the smell of wet earth.
The children have completed learning about the creation story in RE and have talked about the importance of a feeling of community. To reflect this, some children made paper dolls linked together and others did some baking and made gingerbread people.
In science, the children became engineers and were challenged to predict the strongest shape to make a tall building. An extra challenge was to investigate this using just paper and card, no Lego ! They all enjoyed making their buildings in the of shapes of cylinders, cuboids and prisms. To test the strength of the different shapes, the children used books as weights and shared their results which they found were very consistent.
We wish all the Year 1 children and their families an enjoyable half term.
