Year 1 have started the new term bubbling with enthusiasm and energy. Their new topic ‘Space’ has sparked lots of interest. Last week, they learned that Yuri Gargarin was the first person to travel into space and orbit the earth. The children watched a short film which dramatised his journey. They were surprised to see his orange space suit, as well technology from over 50 year ago - telephones and computers looked very different!
The recent fine weather has definitely been a bonus as the children were able to go outside for their maths lesson and learn about positional language. They practised using the vocabulary by setting each other challenges.
Our new science topic is Plants and this week has been all about that humble vegetable, the potato. The children were amazed to learn that there are many varieties of potato, including one which has the same name as someone in class. After looking closely at seed potatoes, the children planted them in transparent containers so they can observe changes over time. Everyone is hoping that this experimental planting will be successful.
