In September, the Year 1 children returned to school full of enthusiasm and delight at being back with their friends.
Our topic about Life in a Castle started straight away with a terrific interactive workshop by the Freshwater Theatre Company. Transformed into knights, the children danced at a banquet, fought in battle and defended the castle. Throughout the workshop, the children learned about the different parts of the castle and why they were important. They imagined the rich food served at a banquet in the great hall and the arrow holes in the battlements.
Year 1 also really enjoyed participating in the St Luke's Maths day activities which were all based on money. Their challenge was to purchase equipment for a playground. However, like a real life situation, they were also given a budget for their spending. This was great practice for the years ahead, although at this stage in their lives, Year 1 found it a fun, collaborative activity using practical maths. In the afternoon, the children set up a role play shop where they could continue to learn about money.
Although, opportunities to perform and sing have been different this term, the Year 1 children did an amazing job learning lines and singing songs for their class assembly. They were very keen to show their classroom and share their learning. Well done all of Year 1 - you have been fantastic this term.
