Through starting the new topic of ‘Incredible India’, the natural beauty and rich culture has captured imaginations in Year 3.
The children have been fascinated by the Indian traditional stories told in English sessions using Madhur Jaffrey’s collection, ‘Seasons of Splendour’. Tales of temples, palaces, royalty and family have prompted lively discussions with a sense of wonder and inquisitiveness. With the purpose of ‘writing to entertain’ as the focus, the children have worked on using varying sentence structures to engage the reader in their descriptions of characters from these fascinating stories and have developed their use of prepositional phrases to add more detail to their sentences.
This learning has been supported by R.E lessons about Hinduism. The children have gained an understanding of the various forms of Brahman, the Hindu God, and the roles that they have in the Hindu faith.
As the children grow in their appreciation of a different culture, they have also started a project in Design Technology which is linked to their learning in the new Science topic about plants. The children have been finding out about how greenhouses work and learning about their structure to guide them in designing and creating their own mini greenhouses.
