It has been a brilliant first term for the children in Year 4. The children have been on a fantastic journey supported along the way by different educational workshops.
The children were fascinated with the Anglo-Saxon and Vikings topic covered this term. The children were wowed when they constructed the 3 metre high roundhouse. The workshop encouraged children to work cooperatively as well exposing them to fantastic bites of history concerning the Anglo-Saxon period.
Later in the term the children enjoyed learning more about Anglo-Saxon culture as they took part in a ‘Beowulf’ themed workshop. This workshop provided fantastic inspiration for the class to create and write their own Beowulf story, where they wrote informatively about Anglo-Saxon culture.
Since half term, the children have focused primarily on the vicious Viking’s the distant cousins of the Anglo-Saxons only separated by time and sea. The children thoroughly relished in the learning that took place during this half of the term. Norse mythology provided endless opportunities for the budding historians. The children discussed in great detail Norse gods and the Viking’s firm beliefs in world tree.
During class discussions we learnt of how history always has a link to modern times, holding discussions on how recent media has used ideas from Norse mythology to shape and build heroes and heroines.
Well done on a great term.
