This week in Reception, we’ve dived into creativity for Arts Week! We began by experimenting with flower-stem printing—children painted one side of real flower stems, then pressed them onto paper at different angles. The result? A wildflower collage full of stems and branching lines—a beautiful way to bring nature directly into our art!
Next, we explored pointillism using cotton earbuds. Inspired by artists who use tiny dots to build images, we dipped the buds into paint and carefully tapped them onto paper. This allowed us to create mini “blooms,” exploring how grouping colours can blend and sparkle. We talked about how Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is known for covering whole surfaces in colourful dots—it was a great moment to connect our own dot paintings with big‑art ideas! Our Reception artists loved tilting sticks for prints and dotting with precision. They practised fine motor skills, patience, and seeing how small marks can make big pictures.
We then took our art outdoors, heading to the park next to our school to collect different leaves and bark. The children gathered lots of shapes and textures, from smooth leaves to rough bark bits. Back in class, we placed the samples under paper and used crayons to create texture rubbings. Everyone was excited to see the veins of leaves and ridges of bark appear in delicate patterns—an amazing way to connect with nature and learn through touch!
