Below is our most recent blog. This includes a summary of the last two weeks including any important information for the coming weeks (reminders etc).
Last week, Year 1 went on a local history walk linked to Kingston’s aircraft industry. The children walked to Sigrist Square which was once the site of the Sopwith Aviation Company where aircraft were designed and built at the beginning of the 20th Century. During the walk, the children took part in an ‘historic treasure hunt’ to spot buildings, landmarks and features which are connected to the manufacture of aeroplanes in this part of Kingston.
Having already looked at an aerial photo of the area taken in 1917, many of the children were able to identify the original buildings including the frontage of the factory. They also spotted signs showing where Sopwith aircraft were built and the real propeller in Sigrest Square. World Book Day proved to be very exciting and eventful.
Year 1 children made some amazing hats inspired by their favourite books. In class, they loved listening to the book ‘Dragon Dave Not So Brave’ being read aloud to them. After a class discussion, they followed instructions from an illustrator and drew their own dragons. The sponsored bounce in the afternoon was a huge success; the children all had their own mini trampolines and could bounce for half an hour completing different challenges.
On Wednesday 18th March it is the Year 1 trip to Brooklands Museum. The class are already looking forward to this as it will give them the opportunity to look and experience aircraft more closely, including Concorde.
