Blog for Friday 14th March 2025
Last Friday, it was wonderful to see all the Year 1 children wearing their comfy clothes to enjoy a day of World Book Day activities and reading for pleasure. As a class, the children enjoyed listening to The Ugly Five being read to them. It is clearly a popular Julia Donaldson book; they were inspired to choose one of the animals and create a ‘Top Trumps’ type of score card for different categories.
Earlier in the week, the children had the opportunity to join an online World Book Day event at the National Aquarium in Plymouth. They enjoyed listening to a story read to them by a mermaid but especially liked the live walkabout to learn about the marine animals, including a turtle called Friday, sharks and a seahorse.
This week’s highlight has been the trip to Brooklands Museum where the children saw a real Sopwith Camel aircraft which was made in the Kingston factory. They also had the opportunity to go inside Concorde. The Science week activity, to investigate which materials are best for sound proofing, was linked to the ‘Brooklands Can’, an invention to reduce exhaust noise from racing motorbikes and cars. There was lots of excitement during the rocket launch session. Team 4 (Mrs Bamber) were victorious as their rocket travelled the furthest!
