How wonderful it was to welcome back Reception to our brand-new topic of mini beasts this half term! We started by reading our focus book for this week – Yucky worms! We learnt all about how worms are actually our friends due to all that they do for our environment and soil. We even wrote them a thank you sentence in our English Lesson about how they aerate the soil and their castings provide nutrients for plants to grow.
We then went exploring our outside area which has been themed for this term! Mrs Munoz created an incredible spider’s web between two beams – be careful not to get stuck! Our house for this term has also been changed into a research facility – with lots of different scientific equipment out for the children to research bugs with.
Our mud kitchen has turned into a mini beast café! Place your orders of ladybird smoothies and worm jam on toast! The children have been hard at work making these delicious treats and working the tills!
Finally, we have our own mini beast exploration table kitted out with magnifying glasses, tweezers and various bug watching jars. We covered a tuff tray in soil and have explored the reception garden- looking under logs and in different soils to dig up worms, woodlice, ants, spiders and even a centipede!
