Class update from Friday 27th January 2026:

As part of their current topic, Year 1 have continued to learn about pioneers of flight. Following on from the Wright brothers, the children discovered the achievements of Amy Johnson, one of the most famous female pilots of the 20th century. They compared her aircraft the Gipsy Moth with the Wright brothers’ Flyer aeroplane. Looking at maps, they also discussed the distances flown by Amy Johnson. They were amazed to find out that she was the first female pilot to make a solo flight from the United Kingdom to Australia.

In their art lesson, Year 1 looked at the decorated sculptures of moths which were made to celebrate Amy Johnson’s achievements flying a Gipsy Moth. Inspired by these, the children created their own collage images of moths.

In PSHE, Year 1 discussed with a partner how they felt when they succeeded in a new challenge and how they celebrated. The children described positive feelings with a range of vocabulary including, proud and brave. The phrase which resonated with all of them was, ‘my heart felt warm and I wanted to smile.’ Celebrations included a ‘happy dance’.

Before half term, Year 1completed their last P.E. lesson focussing on rugby skills. They thoroughly enjoyed learning to tag and running to pass a ball.
