Below is our most recent blog. This includes a summary of the last two weeks including any important information for the coming weeks (reminders etc).
What a fabulous start to the year it has been, with Year 6 returning refreshed for this half term’s topic. The children have turned back the clock to the time of Queen Victoria and have begun to ask questions regarding her reign; effects of the Industrial Revolution on Britain and famous names of the era. Their work across the curriculum over this half-term will build towards answering the big question: ‘The Victorian era – Dark Age or Golden Age?’
Having begun the topic with an enquiry-based session, they were presented with a variety of sources and were challenged to justify the impression they had of the Victorian period from the evidence available, along with any prior knowledge. Why not have a look at the photograph of artefacts pictured and talk about them with your child?
Our text for our Reading Workshops this half term is ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty (an author encountered in Year 5, who wrote the book ‘Treason’). This bestselling novel based on the story of Jim Jarvis, who alerted Dr Barnardo to the plight of destitute children in Victorian London, has already provided opportunity for thoughtful discussion and drama.
On a lighter side, the class have enjoyed recreating a range of natural and man-made patterns in preparation for their work on Victorian artist William Morris.
