In English lessons the Year 1 children have been planning a space themed story. Using our Year 1 book ‘Look Up’ as inspiration, they produced some wonderful imaginative writing which included adverbs, conjunctions and adjectives.
Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut, has been the focus of Humanities lessons; the children watched a short film about her experience on the Mir space station. They were fascinated to see how she ate space food and that she also had an important job in space, completing scientific experiments.
This term, the children have been learning about Sikhism. They have been fascinated with the story of Guru Nanak and have retold the first story of Sikhism through drama. We have looked closely at Gurdwara’s, the Sikh’s holy place of worship and talked about the significance of the exterior and interior of the Gurdwara. Together, children created collages of Gurdwara’s based of their observations and what they have learnt.
In art, the children have been studying David Hockney’s Spring paintings of the East Yorkshire country side. The noted the colours and the use of distance and perspective in his paintings of the woods and trees. Following this, the children recreated similar images learning how to reflect perspective.
